This very inscrutable foursome has got a lock on making very emotional music.  Sure, this leans toward pop, but not because it's always whimsicle.  Yellow #1's pop leanings spring from their nicely structured songs.  While the whimdy shows through sometimes (as on songs like "It's Sad Being a Cartoon Character"), but it's their ability to convey the trials and tribulations of the real human experience (the minor insecurities and disappoinments along with the small joys) that is their main strength.  Which is not to say that their musicianship is anything but solid:  every member of the band sings on one song or another, but Brian Paone seems to be the prodigy here.  He plays just about every instrument and wrote 90% of the lyrics.

review of "Day Off (pissing it all away vocal edit)" from Daddy's Presents:  Best of Massachusetts compilation

The Massachusetts disc started with a very odd sound collage, "Day Off," by Yellow #1.  Snippets of techno, disco, and rock styles slammed together like canned sardines with some kind of odd babbling by a slightly deranged sounding guy.  Interesting stuff, especially for those of you with Attention Deficit Disorder...
